What Are Man Lifts?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration defines a man lift as, “A device consisting of a power-driven endless belt moving in one direction only, and provided with steps or platforms and handholds attached to it for the transportation of personnel from floor to floor.” The terms “aerial lifts”, “scissor lifts”, and “boom lifts” have also been used interchangeably with man lifts. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1380 workers have been injured while operating an aerial lift between the years of 2011 and 2014. In those same years, approximately 87 workers had fatal accidents while operating an aerial lift. The American National Standards Institute and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration developed standards for the design, manufacturing, training, and safe performance of man lifts.

Causes of man lift accidents may include, but are not limited to:

  • Inadequate training provided to maintenance crews.
  • Inadequate inspections and maintenance of equipment.
  • Lack of fall protections like guardrails, scaffoldings, and warning signage.
  • Improperly secured harness.
  • Collisions with other objects or vehicles.
  • High and gusty wind conditions.
  • Operating on uneven surfaces.
  • Exceeding the weight capacity for the man lift basket.
  • Having contact with electrical wiring.
