Belviq Cancer Lawsuit

Belviq Attorneys in Boston, MA

Weight-loss drugs have a checkered history with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Belviq and Belviq XR (lorcaserin) are some of the latest medications to be pulled from the market. In January 2020, the FDA began reviewing clinical trials that linked the drugs to a heightened risk for cancer. Unfortunately, the drug had been on the market – and consumers had been taking this medication – since 2012. Results of a double-blind study found that pancreatic, colorectal, and lung cancers were more common in the patients who took lorcaserin than those who took a placebo (sugar pill).

As such, the FDA pulled Belviq and Belviq XR from the market in February 2020. While the FDA’s decision will protect countless consumers in the future, it does little for those who took the drug between 2012 and 2020.

If you or a loved one was diagnosed with cancer after taking Belviq or Belviq XR, Mitcheson & Lee LLP can help.

Eisai Inc.’s Responsibility

Belviq and Belviq XR should never have been on the market, but Eisai Inc. sold its drugs regardless. Consumers bought lorcaserin to help them curb hunger and manage obesity but unknowingly put themselves at risk in the process.

When drugs hurt consumers instead of helping them, manufacturers must be held accountable. Our Boston Belviq attorneys can help ensure Eisai Inc. takes responsibility for their misdeeds.

The FDA’s Advice

The FDA has recommended all patients stop taking lorcaserin and talk to their doctors about other weight-loss medications and management programs. If you have leftover drugs, take them to a drug take-back location or mix them with dirt, cat litter, or coffee grounds and dispose of them in a sealed plastic bag.

While the FDA is not suggesting any special cancer screenings for people who took lorcaserin, you can ask your doctor for advice if you feel uncomfortable.

If you’ve already been diagnosed with cancer or have any side effects related to Belviq or Belviq XR, the FDA asks that you report them to its MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.

We also want to remind you that your diagnosis is not acceptable, and at Mitcheson & Lee LLP, we will not let Eisai Inc. get away with harming you.
