Elmiron Eye Disease Lawsuit

Elmiron is a prescription drug meant to treat interstitial cystitis or “painful bladder syndrome.” Unfortunately, the drug has also been associated with a severe eye disease called maculopathy – and blindness.

If you or someone you love developed maculopathy or went blind after using Elmiron for interstitial cystitis, Mitcheson & Lee LLP may be able to help.

Call us at (617) 934-3207 to find out what we can do for you.

About Elmiron

Since 1996, millions of patients have used Elmiron to cope with their interstitial cystitis. Also called “painful bladder syndrome,” interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition causing bladder pressure and pain, frequent urination, and pain in the pelvis.

Although Elmiron relieves some of these symptoms, it can also cause maculopathy, or degeneration of the macula. The macula is the central part of the retina and is responsible for highly sensitive, accurate vision. Maculopathy can prevent you from reading, seeing fine detail, focusing your vision, and recognizing faces and colors. It is also one of the leading causes of blindness in the Western world.

Suffering from maculopathy? Our Boston-based Elmiron lawyers are here for you.

The Link to Maculopathy

Elmiron was first linked to severe eye disease in 2015, when doctors at Emory Eye Center in Atlanta discovered an unknown type of maculopathy in 6 women. The only thing these 6 women had in common is that they were all taking Elmiron. As such, the medical and scientific community continued to do research.

Studies released in 2018 and 2019 confirmed the link between Elmiron and maculopathy.

Symptoms of this specific type of maculopathy include:

  • Change of color in the retina
  • Visual dark spots
  • Straight lines appearing curved or squiggly
  • Muted, less vivid colors
  • Difficulty reading
  • Blurred vision, especially central vision
  • Trouble adjusting to dimmer lighting

Even with mounting evidence against Elmiron, the drug’s manufacturer, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, has not listed maculopathy as a potential side effect of Elmiron. Without this warning, countless consumers are unwittingly putting themselves at risk and taking a drug that may one day take away their vision.

Many people have already suffered maculopathy and blindness as a result of Janssen Pharmaceuticals’ greed and negligence.

Holding Jannsen Pharmaceuticals Accountable

For the past 5 years, Jannsen Pharmaceuticals has continued to sell Elmiron despite knowledge of its potential harms. While the company profits, consumers are unwittingly jeopardizing their health and vision.

This irresponsible and profit-driven behavior has already inspired lawsuits on behalf of the injured.

If you or someone you love has suffered, we encourage you to come forward, too.
